Hands down one of the nicest guys in the Texas Music Scene is Bart Crow…when you head out to his show or meet him on the street you will automatically see that he is genuine and his heart is true. I recently met up with Bart Crow to discuss the benefits of green smoothies, especially concerning recovery after his upcoming surgery. A week later, Bart had surgery to replace the L5 disk in his back. Dr. Scott Spann in Austin did a great job (www.westlakeortho.net)
One of the most recent, popular health trends – juicing – is a great way to quickly pack in tons of nutrients. However, juicing’s heartier cousin – blending – is much better for post-surgery recovery because it allows you to get in all that extra fiber. They are great for musicians like Bart because it’s pretty easy to have a blender in the bus or van, and you can make them while on the road.
It is always great to add vitamin C to your diet. Despite oranges getting the most vitamin C attention, kiwi actually have almost twice as much per serving. Add plenty of berries for lots of fiber a.k.a. digestive movement. Just one cup of raspberries or blackberries packs 8 grams of fiber. Pineapple and papaya each contain a digestive enzyme (Bromelain & Papain) that will also help with movement. Good Belly drink contains lots of probiotics for gut health. In fact, those probiotics do double-duty because a healthy gut can also lead to a decrease in depression because there are twice as many neurotransmitters in your gut than your brain.
For Bart’s smoothie, we used ½ C raspberries, a handful of baby kale & spinach, a quarter of a pineapple, 1 C Good Belly, and a teaspoon of MSM – to help with his joint health. You don’t have to be exact on any of the measurements, and you can make almost any veggie and fruit combination you like. If you like a little bit of sweetness, forego sugar or honey, and add some banana. Although it makes it creamier when you add milk or yogurt to your smoothie, try to avoid dairy during post-surgery recovery. Just blend until it is green and there aren’t anymore big chunks, and enjoy!
