Kick the Cold Sores with Food!

With the summer heat blazing and the tan bodies glowing you might find yourself with an unwanted cold sore.  Yes, that’s right sunshine can make those unwanted lip blemishes appear.  The best line of defense is Abreva; however, there are things you can eat to also help ward off the blisters & let your body enjoy sun’s Vitamin D.

Lysine and Arginine are two amino acids (the building blocks of proteins).  When it comes to herpes, lysine has been shown to reduce outbreaks and a diet high in arginine encourages outbreaks.  The trick is to balance your diet with foods higher in lysine than with arginine, especially during the sunny summer months.

If you start to feel an outbreak come on you can also supplement with L-Lysine (1,000mg three times per day) and if you find yourself getting them more often than not consider taking a daily dose of 1,000mg lysine.

As for food here are a list of foods to boost your lysine intake:

  • fish
  • yogurt
  • mung bean (sprouts)
  • cheese
  • all beans (except chickpeas)
  • nutritional yeast
  • eggs

Here are foods to avoid during outbreaks:

  • all nuts & nut butters
  • cocoa (yep, chocolate)
  • chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • oats
  • coconut
  • sunflower seeds
  • raisins
  • brown rice
